Pokemon go developer Niantic Labs will partner with businesses to introduce sponsored locations in-game, according to the New York Times. Australian student Manu Gill discovered a few odd-looking strings that he believes indicate a sponsorship system has already been included in the game’s code while the clients is Mcdonald’s.
- A sponsored location would likely take the form of PokéStops, which players are encouraged to visit to collect items and gain experience. Several restaurants, bars and other retail places that happen to double as PokéStops are already using this tactic to increase foot traffic.
- Niantic CEO wanted to have more sponsored areas accept retail and other industries appears on the virtual map. K11 and Dpark could try to partner with Pokemon go in order to drive more traffic.
